In Pozzuoli, amid the vapors of the Rione Terra and the breath of the sea brushing the harbor, there is a small building hidden in a hollow carved by the volcano — the Mini Hotel.
Few know that beneath its foundations lies an intricate labyrinth of ancient Roman caves and tunnels that once connected the Serapeum’s thermal baths to the shores of the sea.
But it is not only the stones that tell stories: watching over this place is a legend that has defied the centuries.
It is said that when Parthenope died and her body reached Naples, one of her sisters, Leucosia, devastated by grief, dove into the waters of the Phlegraean Fields, swearing never to surface again. The gods, moved by her sorrow, transformed her into a mermaid of fire and ash, condemned to live between the vapors of the underground and the boiling waters of the Puteolan sea.
Since then, on nights when the sea is calm, some claim to see a reddish glow beneath the surface, like a flame dancing between the waves. It is the sign that Leucosia has awakened.
And the Mini Hotel?
It is said to stand directly above one of the ancient thermal chambers where the mermaid found refuge. Locals swear that on stormy nights, or when the volcano murmurs in its sleep, those staying in the lower rooms hear a distant, deep song that vibrates through the walls:
“I do not burn, I breathe.
I do not die, I wait.”
According to an old Pozzuoli fishermen’s legend, anyone who listens to that song without fear will be protected from fire and sea for life.
But those who try to seek its source… well, they risk discovering more than they ever wished to!
A guest of the Mini Hotel, years ago, claimed he heard the song during a rainy night. He said he saw the figure of a woman with hair made of light, eyes burning like lava, and a voice that called him by name.
The next morning, the man remembered nothing, except for a small black seashell he found on his pillow — warm to the touch, as if it still held the fire of the Phlegraean Fields.
Since then, anyone staying at the Mini Hotel who hears a whisper rising from the floor leaves a coin on the windowsill as an offering to the fire mermaid who watches over the city.
Because, as the people of Pozzuoli say with a smile:
“In Pozzuoli, even the sea has a warm heart.”
