The Temple of Serapis, Macellum of Pozzuoli

Visit the Temple of Serapis: Also known as the Macellum of Pozzuoli, it is one of the greatest archaeological place when you come to visit this city: an example of an ancient Roman food market that has managed to preserve itself over the years thanks to bradyseism phenomena.

The name of Temple of Serapis, improper to the original denomination, derives from the fact that a statue of the Egyptian god Serapis was found inside it, discovery that initially made the archaeologists  think of a pagan temple.

Excavations began in the 18th century to bring to light that since the Flavian era, ancient Roman food market was active for several centuries

Until now the Temple of Serapis or Macellum of Pozzuoli is one of the most interesting monuments in the Phlegraean area; an archaeological site of inestimable value and which must be visted when you are around.
